What Makes it Family Friendly?

We invited 42 local families to go undercover into the cultural quarter to do some mystery shopping and to find out how to make family activities even better. The families then devised their own manifesto of what makes a great family friendly activity and venue:

1 Programme
An interactive programme that is suitable for a wide age range.
An artistic programme which reflects the diverse population of local families.
Regular provision all year round at family friendly times (holidays, half-terms, weekends).
2 Facilities & Services
Food and drink which suitable for families or space for families to enjoy their own food.
Clear information about access routes & storage for pushchairs and baby changing facilities
Staff who are aware of the needs of our family visitors.
3 Environment
An indoor environment which is safe and robust for ‘little hands’ to explore.
Information about the journey to and from the venues and where to find suitable activities
An attractive outdoor space in between venues for children and families to explore.
4 Marketing & Communications
Special offers and discount tickets for families in Lambeth and Southwark.
Distribution of information to local venues regularly accessed by families
A central point of contact for information which is easily identified by families.
Marketing materials targeted specially at families and distributed at local family venues.

We are now working with our partners organisations to develop a shared understanding of what makes family friendly activity in the Cultural Quarter and we will be promoted activities through the summer.

Some feedback from the families:

"… the workshop was a whole different experience from other workshops we’ve been too as it was led by industry experts and they really inspired my daughter to experiment and stretch herself. The materials were really high quality - the only thing was I wanted to participate too!" Clare, mother of one, Waterloo
